‘He’s just plain good’ - Kamagurka
‘Steve is a contemporary artist with a flair for old farmer’s wisdom…His drawings are like proverbs.(…) The atmosphere is pastoral, the humorist a painter of landscapes. Steve can take his place among the Flemish masters: Herr Seele, Benoit, Kamagurka, Ever Meulen, Gal,…’ - Jan Florizoone
‘(…) It’s best to put the Flemish-Belgian aspect in perspective(…) The backdrop might be Flemish-Belgian, but the situations could just as well be Portuguese, Finnish, or Canadian.’- Benoit Van Innis
‘Steve knows how to lay it on(…) sometimes with a heavy hand, because the legs and the eyes aren’t always in the same place as they’d be in real life, but maybe that’s what makes Steve’s illustrations so appealing. They’re so human. (…) It’s the power of love that wins you over.’ -Gerda Dendooven
‘(…) Thanks Steve, for your insight, your twisted vision, your unique voice, and your compassion.(…)’ - Raymond van het Groenewoud
STEVE
For years, cartoonist Steve Michiels (1970) has been sketching seemingly naive images of local, national, and international current events. Seemingly naive because his cartoons are sharp, at times razor sharp, but always amusingly telling.
On this website you will find a selection of cartoons that appeared in the Belgian and Dutch press and trade papers between 1993 and 2008. The common red thread through these images is the resourceful discovery of humor in otherwise awkward situations.
Steves illustrations have been published in Focus/Knack, Trends, De Tijd, De Standaard, De Morgen, NRC-Handelsblad, Vrij Nederland, VPRO-Gids and Fluide Glacial among others. In 2002 and 2005 he received an honorable mention at the annual PCB-awards (Press Cartoon Belgium), Knokke.
In 2007 he received the BeNe award for the best cartoon made in Belgium and The Netherlands.
